Hello guys, long time no see.
This time I won't talk about talk about Divinion's sequel, mainly because it's been mostly on hiatus those last few months. Why? Well, for one, I was getting tired of RPG Maker gameplay. Two, because first prototype of the game was very much not to my satisfaction. Until I get inspired on how to proceed with Renan's story, I decided to put my focus on the side project I mentioned in recent posts.
And here we are: I present you my side project: Record of Asturion War. It's not an JRPG like Divinion, but SRPG in vein of Fire Emblem games. If you're familiar with the series, you'll find yourself right at home.
Now, is there a H-content in this? of course there is. However, the game is purposefully divided into two parts: until second one starts, you'll find no trace of adult themes in the game (aside from a few swearwords). This is done on purpose and with premeditation on my part.
In a way, this is a return to roots for me. The Dark Lord Rises was initially to be a game with heavy emphasis on corruption and transformations of heroines; story there went different way, but this one will not.
Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy the game. Version 0.1 has 38 chapters; I am aiming to have story finish around 65-70th chapter, so there is and will be a lot to play with. Hopefully, part one won't bore you before you get to the meaty parts.

DeleteI mean the Lord figure. Because you seem to be foreshadowing him getting his moral character reversed somehow eventually thanks to the prophecy.

ReplyDeleteSo I reached chapter 34 but I can't seem to figure out how to beat it all of the enemies kill my units in one hit and the sleep spell only has a range of one so I can't sneak by them while they are asleep. Can you give me any hints?
ReplyDeleteAvoid that one marksman unit to the south, your mage unit should be able to easily beat crap out of weaker units in the area. Don't even try to help your allies/go west, your goal is to get that cart to the castle and that's it.

-A story who could be a fire emblem honestly. Good point.
-Large cast of characters, there are not really developped but with the number is logical. Good point.
-Interesting characters : Bastian (i was hoping he was the prince of the elven prophecy), Balthazar (despicable but original)... Good point.
-Acceptable protagonist. It's difficult to have a really interesting protag with this kind of story, but Marek was okay.
As this point I was really interested and hyped. Your first Dark lord game made a good job with the good-to-evil process of Renan. But...
Bosun appears !
Honestly i have ne problem playing a evil or/and ugly character, it can work with proper writing. But Bosun is just disgusting :
-Brutal brainwashing as corruption method (i admit there is still a little psychology in it but the personnality of the girls are almost crushed).
-Despised females (hopes of interesting relationship with a girl are fleeing)
-Objective : the throne and girls. His death brothers (Bastian except) had the same (and it's not compliment).
-No real friendship. I admit, maybe his pet mage, but i was really hoping at least something for another human being.
-No redeeming qualities. I can find reason for his behavior but nothing in what he shows make me believe he was one day a good person .
When he finally come to brainwash Helana i realize that I hated him as much i hate a netorare vilain. If he was the vilain I am supposed to beat it would have been perfect. But the evil protagonist of a corruption story ? Sorry but it's a big no.
I am sorry if it seems harsh. Honestly the game and the universe have a lot of qualities and clearly put some time and effort in it. But this flaw was too much for me to handle.
well we all have our preferred genres but most fans (including me) wanted a "REAL VILLIAN W/ MIND CONTROL POWERS" and we got it in bosun. (thank you dev) and to be honest, in my opinion. this is what i really wanted from a mind control/corruption (whatever you call it) kind of game. AND we get to play as him!? sign me up! still, about what he did too helena, well, i hardly call that NTR. i mean her "Husbando" is "GONE-GONE". it's one thing if he's alive, but it's a different story if he's not. so helena's technically a widow at best. besides. as you and any "dark fantasy" fans already know. it's not a genre for the faint-of-heart. no offense. so i say either bear w/ it or wait for the 3rd part of "dark lord".
DeleteI have no problem with a real bad guy honestly. It's difficult to feel any connection/sympathy/other for a bad guy with no redeeming qualities but even with that it can work. I would have played Bosun since the beginning I could have accepted it, after all it's just our typical hentai protagonist : rapist, no real relationship, hating women, goal is fucking...

I grow attach to the cast and suddendly I am supposed to brainwash everyone for a weak protag (with no emotional connection).
I know it's dark fantasy and it can be harsh (and I don't care about that) but for a game who take 33 levels to grow, I expect more than a virgin porn game protagonist.
Last thing when i say : I hate him like I hate a NTR vilain, i know this is not NTR, but the amount of hate is the same. I am a fan of corruption game and i am not supposed to feel hatred towards the one who corrupt, that's the problem.
Ah I see... you have grown attached to marek and his group and maybe the 1st part of the story itself. I don't blame you for that. and I can also sympathize with you since I'm somewhat the same. but, as the dev said. marek's arc is a pre-plot, not just an explanation for bosun's arc. but I think it's for the whole story/game itself. like about the prophecy, bosun's so-called "destiny" and what is marek's REAL role in all this. I think marek as a portag is finished (maybe?). but his story and role in the game is FAR from over. and personally. while you and some others feel bosun's story is "Out-Of-Place". positively, it gave answers to questions in bosun's point of view and, while I can't speak for others. at the very least for me. I can accept his arc easier because of it.
DeleteImagine Playing as bosun at first. sure, it becomes easier to play it since your evil right off the bat. but it's gonna leave us more questions about the game itself and the characters as well (like playing divinion FIRST and not playing TDLR). and it might become just a common evil protag game, which is something I personally against at (it's fine if it's like that but it will also be easily forgotten as well). Now, we all have something to look forward too instead. not just playing as an evil ugly pervy bad guy. but what his role AS the bad guy will affect the whole plot... I believe this is the dev's real aim in this game. (aside from the H-scenes, do you know Breath of Fire IV? a classic. you get to play as the protag AND antag)
Will the game end with bosun corrupting every female character we met in the game? will marek win again and be a hero a 2nd time? and if he will, what does he need to give up in order to win this time around? or is bosun really the "last-evil-boss"? or there is something/someone else that none of us know. watching in the shadows, looking how the war plays out then he/she or it comes out and makes an grand entrance.
so because of these possible scenarios, I like what the dev did and can't wait how the story unfolds. (plus more and more H-scenes of course) and I'm hoping from the dev a satisfying ending in this awesome game. whether it's a light/dark or a TRUE ending. as long as it leaves a place in our hearts. this will be a true gem of a so-called "Side-Project" of a game.
Not specially to Marek or the group. Bosun feels too simplistic for a world developped with 33 chapters, I know his story would make less sense if we began directly with him. But like you worded it, Bosun is really out of the place, not as character but as protagonist.

I still hope to have my bad impression negated (like you said there is option), but i am not optimist for now.

DeleteFair enough, I guess the only thing we can both agree on is that there should be more than one ending at least. like I said, Light (Marek Wins), Dark (Bosun Wins) and/or a True ending (Bosun Wins/Loses and/but Marek Becomes Corrupted in a way, willingly/unwillingly). Or even a Hidden ending (a 3rd anonymous party comes into play)
DeleteNotice I don't use the words "Good" or "Bad" endings. since this is a story that's on war. either side kills and invades. but that's war as it is.
And personally, I want a Dark ending where we got a "Straight-A", "Evil-Incarnate" villain and very girl (if possible) we know is corrupted. and bosun has his Corrupted "Utopia". I'm getting a bit tired of stories of "so-called" villains/dark lords/demon kings that do evil things too (more or less) but has a vision of a utopia where everybody gets along "Peacefully" and "Happily"...

Honestly i am not really a fan of utopia overlord too (except if everyone is carefully corrupted in that way of course) so i can agree with that.

ReplyDeleteMay i say it was an excellent game. you weren't kidding when you said it was long. i mean i played it in cheat mode and it still took me a week and a few days. i honestly like this game more than "dark lord" to be frank. while your main game had a awesome story that leave me mind blown. the gender bender thing was a turn off. REALLY. but somehow i was able to finished both "TDLR" and "Divinion" it due to the pandemic. (had hardly anything else to play and great games like this are more scarce than finding a pearl in the beach). anyways, I REALLY LOVE WHAT YOU DID HERE. BUT! if it's alright, i'll point out a few bugs and concerns so the 2nd part of "Record of Asturion War" will be more perfect. :)
Bugs:
*German's FULL Art Spite is missing. Can't see what he looks like it in the status or anywhere in the game. just his mini spite.
*Some Short Story dialogs (both in Marek's and Bosun's ARC) in the "support" button before battles CAN'T be seen or read. you see it's title but does nothing else. either it's a REAL bug or i didn't recruited all side characters (which i did). but i recommend to look this up.
*The game crashes when "Dark Erika" fights and the "Real Battle" button is ON. i had to turn it off to avoid it.
*In the mission where you have to save Orland. it's hardly possible to save him in time. he dies before you could reach him. (this is the ONLY reason why i played it in cheat mode)
Concerns:
*Add a Gallery Option for the H-Scenes. (Including the h-scenes in the Support button) PLEASE...
*A little concern since there is no cheat weapon in Bosun's ARC. the enhance EXP GAIN is still there but that's it.
*and finally, i hoped there are 2-3 endings in this game. (A LIGHT, DARK and/or a possible TRUE ending) like for example, in the last mission of the game. you get too chose which "side" your gonna take or something similar.

In part 2, it's Jetho who gets cheat weapon (Dues Vult) instead of Bosun, since Bosun rearely is available. Did it not spawn properly?
Yeah, I'll make some changes to that map with Orland, missions with allies are tough to balance properly.
You didn't miss any short stories, those titles are just ideas I have for next release (forgot to remove them from 0.10).

2. Sadly no, Jetho had only Ignis. and while we're on the cheat weapons. is it possible to give Ellisandra her own Cheat Weapon? (Both Marek and Euphie had theirs and Lissie is like a second protag in bosun's ARC anyways since bosun is hardly around in battle and the battle conditions involved her) and change the name and info of their Specific weapons? ("Dues Vult" is the "Secret Spell of Ostashian Royalty" and is only for euphie, same with marek's "Varscona". (just saying this for plot reference and for others who cares for details like this, not for me. hehe)
3. Nice, this map cause me a headache for a day until I gave up on normal mode.
4. Great. one less thing to think about. I though I got to play the game all over again just to read those. (maybe I will once orland's map is balanced)
And may i mention some other questions and concerns?
1. is Gabrielle (Half-Elf fencer of torriene) and Eudus (Esteemed Clergyman and cousin to duke Jehan) recruitable in marek's ARC? Because in ch.26 "Eastern Storm". I got too used them once and that's it. I saw in the side stories that Gab is still around but you can't use her. is it possible that I missed my chance too recruit them? or maybe, is Gab "recruitable" in Bosun's ARC? (Ehem..)
2. what's the deal with the "woman bandit lord" where you recruit Meer(Red haired Elf Spearwoman)? she's the only one bandit lord with a proper name (which I forgot), a proper art spite and is probably hot (and other enemy female commander that are MIA). and since unlike most female enemy commanders (which are dead). she escaped and is ALIVE. a possible girl to be "recruit" in bosun's ARC maybe? (Ehem Ehem..)
3. The "Bonus Items" Option in the war room of Bosun's ARC (where you can buy "Order of Valor" and "Martial Instructions" w/ "Bonus Points") is missing. is this part of the game? or a Bug of some sort.
4. is it possible to change the sounds in bosun's ARC just like what you did in the bosun's ARC war room? (at least some, if not all). the "Heroic" sounds and songs doesn't sit well with his ARC. (He's no hero, that's for sure. Hahaha!)
1. No, they are guest characters added to make chapter 26 a bit easier. Both will make their appearances in side. And speaking of recruiting...

DeleteI got to say. the arts you use in this game. frankly, I like it more that TDLR and Divinion. Anime'ish art sprites all the way for me! (the 3D'ish arts are fine but if I had too choose one I'll always prefer this that 3D. Just sayin. I guess I'm enjoy 2D anime art than 3D "life-like" arts. and for that, thank you).
And wow, I can hardly believe you called this a "side-project" dev. REALLY. if this is what you call a side project, You and probably God only knows what the fans are gonna expect in "Dark Lord 3". Hahaha!
